    Frances Cairncross


    Frances Cairncross is Rector (ie, head) of Exeter College, Oxford. Prior to this appointment, she worked at The Economist, most recently as Management Editor.

    Frances was formerly Environment Editor at The Economist, Chair of Britain’s Economic and Social Research Council, and a past President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. She was also a non-executive director of Stramongate Ltd.

    She is the author of several books including, The Company of the Future, published in 2002, and The Death of Distance, a study of the economic and social effects of the global communications revolution. She is a regular presenter of BBC Radio Four’s “Analysis” programme.

    Frances is also a member of the Scottish Council of Economic Advisers and chairs the Executive Committee of the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

    She holds honorary degrees from a number of British universities, from Trinity College Dublin and from Williams College, Massachusetts.
