Kirsty Wark joined the BBC as a radio researcher in 1976 after taking a degree in Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University. As a radio producer in current affairs she produced Good Morning Scotland and the political programme, Order Order.

After a spell on the World at One, Kirsty moved to television in 1983, first as an assistant producer on Agenda and Current Account and then as a producer on Reporting Scotland. In 1985 she both produced and presented the current affairs weekly Seven Days and from then on concentrated on presenting on Reporting Scotland, Left Right and Centre, and the last two General Election programmes. In 1992-93 she presented the new Scottish current affairs show Up Front.

For the BBC she presented Breakfast Time for two years, and the youth television series Words Apart. For the past three years she has worked on Edinburgh Nights, the BBC programme from the Edinburgh Festival. In addition, she fronted the Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley and the Special Olympics in Glasgow.

From 1990-93 she presented the arts programme The Late Show, and since 1993 has fronted the new BBC heritage series One Foot In The Past.

In October 1993 she joined Newsnight, and along with Jeremy Paxman, is one of the main presenters of the programme.

Kirsty was named journalist of the year by BAFTA Scotland in 1993.
